Sergio Payares

Sergio Payares was born in Havana Cuba in 1962.

Though an established artist, he became increasingly frustrated with the stifling artistic climate of his homeland. In 1992 seven of his paintings were removed from his last exhibition by government officials.

At age 30 he fled Cuba to escape “…a government that didn’t allow me to express my artistic and political views”.

In his paintings Payares creates places that are spaces-vast spaces that have no outside, no inside, no perimeter, no boundaries. These spaces are meaningful in themselves, perfect to behold, unsullied.

Into these spaces Payares seems to have quietly returned leaving symbols, monolithic forms, fragile nervy tendrils enclosing unidentified faces. A shadowy figure is placed in the arena and seems to dissolve into the pregnant emptiness.

Payares is gone, leaving no footprint.

Using the sparest of pallets, he has created fields of deeply satisfying quietude. A place of meditative clarity and calm where enigmatic icons exist for our contemplation. Here nothing is lacking and nothing is in excess. We are invited to softly enter and reflect on the informing images and our responses.

Rudy attended the renowned national art school E.N.A. in Habana,
Cuba. She then graduated in 2001 from I.S.A. Art Institute in Habana,
Cuba. Rudeylis served as art professor at San Alejandro Art School from 2001 to 2003.

The artist has exhibited in Cuba, France, Canada, Spain, Mexico, and the U.S.
Rudeylis has several sculptures and murals in Cuba. The artist has won several awards and honors.
Her metal sculptures convey the artist’s obsession or turmoil in fusing the two opposite worlds.
First the world of rigid, tough metals and second, her femininity or womanhood. Her figurative works also come to life also through two opposite techniques.
The first is ancient, “Steel Hammering”. The second is contemporary, “Welding”.
Rudeylis work as the artist states, “Comes to life neither for self – approval nor to be in the art world’s
Lime Light”. I am simply a “Hammer & Steel woman”

In formal terms, my current work is an exploration of how form is determined by, and conversely determines, space. My work references the figure, though more recently it has explored similar figure/ground relationships utilizing basic to explore angles, reflections, and light format. My long history with art in general has driven my most current work, Passion always informs my work.

Unusual shapes, pieces of wood, debris, society waste. In front of the eyes of anybody just ruins. The artist sees what no longer exists or what has not yet existed. To destroy is always the first step before any creation and Michel Hernandez seeks, destroys and creates. For him every moment is a moment of creation, and each one of them contains infinite possibilities.

Cuban American artist Michel Hernandez was born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba in 1975. He immigrated to the United States in 1998, settling in Miami, Florida where he continues to live and work. Michel studied Industrial Mechanics (1993), Acting and Theatre at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA, 1996) in Habana, Cuba. He participated at the world-renowned Casa de las Americas, Primer Festival Internacional de Teatro (First Festival for Theatre of PerformingArts) in Camaguey, Cuba. He is recognized in the Island and abroad as one of the most important Vanguard.

In 2003, Michel is invited to participate and represent the United States in the first cultural exchange with Cuba since 1959.  Essentially a self-taught visual artist, Michel embraced sculpture as a means of expression, exploring his personal identity, both past and present, within the context of the ever-present human modern condition. “[He] utilizes the contemporary aesthetic language in his quest for industrial waste, transforming the meaning of recycle,” states Diana Alvarez-Amell, Art critic and writer, Seton Hall University, NY.  Michel has been the subject of numerous articles and publications, and his work has rendered him as one of the most authentic recycling sculptors in Miami.

Artist Statement.

Having theatre and acting as my first medium, my perception is trained to wander through the everyday forms and shadows embraced by the city. My sculptures come to life through the process of “search and destruction” of the anonymous mechanical wastes that dwell marginal in the metropolis of the human condition. It is the search for these discarded mechanical objects, that only then give meaning to my persistence to transform them into reusable pieces; through my vision they recover an intermittent lifecycle that reflects man’s modern state of being.

Cuban-born MANO came to the United States as part of Operation Pedro Pan* at the age of twelve, with his older brother. For the next five years he lived in Westfield, New Jersey with family friends until he was reunited with his parents.
Although MANO graduated as an electrical engineer and successfully practiced his profession for more than twenty years, he always felt the need to express himself artistically and beyond the design concepts of engineering.  MANO has now traded components and electronics for a new career in art.
He is a self-taught artist who has developed a unique expressionist-style dominated by faces and the female form.  Usually his faces are merely a point of departure for MANO to explore the interplay of contrasting colors on a myriad of surfaces. When asked what inspires him, MANO says “Everything…people, music, nature all lead me on journey’s through the imagination where images converge and forms and color captivate me.  Observation of the mind’s creation allows me to assimilate and recreate, in my own style, the shades of color and images of form”.
MANO has been recognized by Miami Mayor Alex Pinellas and Miami Mayor Manny Diaz for his contribution to Miami’s cultural community. MANO has been featured in numerous publications among them; The Miami Herald, Sun Sentinel,South Miami Times, The Sun Post, Miami Art Guide and the Pittsburgh Tribune. MANO has been recognized by the art and cultural community in South Florida with special recognition by the Arts & Cultural Council of Miami, Miami-Dade County ‘s Hispanic Expressions, Naples Art Festival and Sister Cities International Art Exhibition.
MANO is a true advocate of charitable causes and donates his time and talent regularly to support countless organizations each year through the donation of his art, lectures and workshops.  Ultimately, MANO believes that we should help however we can and  give back to the community.  It gives him great satisfaction to know that his art  provides an opportunity for him to support so many worthwhile causes.
Today, MANO’s art hangs in private and corporate collections throughout the world.  He exhibits regularly in galleries, universities and juried art shows throughout the United States and welcomes visits to his studio in Miami by appointment.
MANO lives in Coral Gables, Florida with his wife, their dog and his many canvases
and paints.

The artist Jorge Santos was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1973; he lived there until 2008, when he came to the United States and settled in Miami. He lives there and continues to create. He studied at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts from 2000 to 2004. His concern with art is his inner self and the relief that art presents by being able to express his inner experiences through life. He is searching for a formal and yet individual expression with strong contour lines, where his characters face his true inner self, presenting all types of emotions, so common but yet so needed in life.

Migration, up-root ness, exile, displacement and trans-culture have been investigated from a personal perspective and informed by a Cuban-American vernacular with sub-contexts of matriarchy, gender roles, and Afro-Caribbean religious practices and in doing so, I have found the experiences to be universal. Utilizing methodologies usually associated with “craft” such as sewing, woodworking and ceramics but operating from a different ethos than those of traditional practitioners mostly concerned with function, I present collage and assemblage long thought to echo and materialize remembrance. Materials are mostly found, post-production or recycled but always re-configured and fabricated. Works can and have been re-installed as dictated to by place and circumstance allowing for re-invention, a daily practice for an immigrant.

I am presently working with reversed, cut paper, multi-layered drawings, created with original stencils using suspension. The layering, shadows, size format and media create a close conversation with the viewer who has to approach the work in a voyeuristic fashion in order to see it thus creating an up close and personal interaction. The first pieces were presented at Universidad Del Sagrado Corazon in Puerto Rico in  As Far As The Eyes Can See, a collective exhibition and international cultural exchange (ICE Grant) funded by Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs.

EL REY DE TODO Y DE NADA (2010, The King of Everything and of Nothing) is one of these works from the series, I Am That I Am, started in 2009. This autobiographical series of works approaches the self as life-like portraiture in a surrealistic setting or an investigation of “self” through word study and analysis: names and adjectives used by others when referencing me. Personal iconography forms the visual vocabulary that relates an upending of meaning. What was thought as protective unravels and exposes. What was thought to be solid crumbles and dissipates. Chairs, ladders, floating windows, clotheslines, a distant and bifurcated but never barren landscape become my travels, recollections and uncovering of self in exile, the slow realization that there can never be a complete reconciliation with what I once knew as self and home.

I was born a Cuban ” Habanero in Marianao a suburb of Habana “  from campesino parents in 1963. This was not very long after the Castro takeover of the island. My early childhood was typical of working-class Cubans of that era. But early on I discovered the pleasure of drawing — first, with crayons on scavenged paper, then with brushes and paints on paper, or wood, or anything I could find. By the time I was entering my teen years, my painting endeavors occupied me so much that I ceased playing with my peers.

Thanks to a recommendation from a neighbor, I was accepted there into an Arts program. Later, in 1986, I graduated from the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts with the equivalent of a B.A. — and also won permission to enroll for post-grad work in the Institute of Superior Arts in Havana. For the next few years I worked in teaching positions at Havana and attended school. But I still continued to develop my artistic vision.

By early 1989, I strayed from the accepted and safe arena of Cuban “Revolutionary Art.” Increasingly, my work depicted visions that simply could not be permitted. The charge against me was “Propaganda Politica” (political propaganda), a very serious crime at the time.

With help from my family, I went into exile in Panama. From there, I flew to the Dominican Republic where I obtained a teaching position at East Central University. I had relatives in both Tampa and Miami. In October of 1991, I landed in Miami.

In Tampa, working in the freedom America grants to all artists, my artistic career was reborn — a career that has already earned me acclaim, producing a body of work attracting discerning collectors around the world. And with no Secret Police to tell me what I can or cannot paint.

My plans for the future can be categorized into short and long term plans. Obviously, in the immediate future is creating more of these types of proposals as cognitive pieces. But more strategically, I would like to systematically work towards participation in biennials. The Cuenca and Sao Paulo Biennials are of great interest to me. It would afford me the opportunity to present my proposals in an international forum of contemporary art.

On a more long term basis, I’d like to expand my presence in important museums and private collections. I have been fortunate to be able to support myself through my art and intend on continuing to do so in the future.

Antonio Guerrero

Rigoberto Antonio Guerrero is a contemporary Cuban American Artist. He was born in 1968 in Matanzas Cuba, under the Castro regime. Guerrero grew up in a household where artistic expression was appreciated and encouraged; although materials were not always available, his dreams and ideas were always abundant.

In 1986 Antonio was drafted into the army and was immediately transported to Africa to fight in the Ethiopian War. He was inspired by the people and scenes of Africa and he developed an interest in modern expressionism and began to experiment with modern forms of visual art. The popularity of his work led to exhibits of his paintings at the military base.

Antonio returned to Cuba in 1988 where he resumed his job as an artisan specializing in painting, engraving woodcarving, sculpting and metal work. Feeling increasingly oppressed by Cuba’s government, and unhappy with the worsening living conditions, Antonio, along with two other men, climbed into a raft they had secretly designed and built. Floating off from the coast of Matanzas, they were at sea for five days before being rescued and brought to the U.S.

In January of 1995 Guerrero’s “Balseros del 92”, (“The Rafters of 92”) was exhibited at Vanidades Gallery in Miami, FL. This painting was part of a collection donated to the Jose Marti Foundation in order to raise money for the Florida International University student scholarships. This portrait of himself along with his cousin and friend fleeing Cuba was said to best commemorate the occasion. On May 17, 1996 Guerrero’s work was exhibited by U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in Washington D.C. as a part of the “Cubans in exile” exhibit.

Guerrero sees the world as a cosmic stage for human activity. “I’m in the system like a computer programmer writing codes with my sketchbook and brushes, playing the critic, here to create and program the unconscious. Apart from all the trouble we cause ourselves, I believe we are immersed in a powerful and beautiful mystery. The fact of our existence is a great riddle to me.
